Welcome to Calstock
Calstock is a charming village in Cornwall, nestled on the banks of the River Tamar, overlooking the Bere Peninsula and Devon on the opposite bank. Its most striking feature is the iconic Calstock Viaduct, a towering 12-arched structure that spans 120 feet above the river. Built between 1904 and 1907, the viaduct is an engineering marvel of its time, made from over 11,000 concrete blocks, a rarity in railway construction during that era. The viaduct remains a key part of the Tamar Valley Line, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape as trains cross from Cornwall into Devon.
Once a bustling hub of mining and river trade, Calstock retains its historic charm with narrow streets, traditional cottages, and an old quay. Old engine houses dotted about being the only real nod to its thriving past. At one time tin, copper, silver and granite were mined here, and transported from the town’s quay to where it was needed. Set at the heart of the Tamar Valley, a National Landscape, the village is a haven for walkers, kayakers, and nature lovers.
Its vibrant community hosts regular events, especially at Calstock Arts, a charming converted chapel overlooking the river, and its proximity to landmarks like Cotehele House adds to its appeal as a must-visit destination in Cornwall.
