Where Natural Beauty Meets Timeless Heritage
Tamar Trails, set in the heart of the stunning Tamar Valley National Landscape, offers over 25 km of well-maintained multi-use trails perfect for walking, running, cycling, and horse riding. These peaceful, traffic-free routes wind through ancient woodland and mining heritage landscapes, providing a safe and inspiring place for people of all ages to enjoy the outdoors.
Walking
Walking at the Tamar Trails is a truly immersive experience. Surrounded by towering woodland, sweeping valley views, and the quiet remnants of a once-booming mining landscape, walkers can choose from a variety of well-marked trails that suit different abilities and interests. Some routes gently follow the riverbanks and old mineral railways, offering peaceful strolls perfect for families or those seeking a leisurely pace. Others lead you deeper into the woodland, where dappled light filters through the trees and the air is filled with birdsong. Whether you’re looking for a short loop or a longer adventure, the Tamar Trails offer an ideal setting to reconnect with nature, explore local history, and enjoy some of the most beautiful countryside in West Devon.
Trail Running
For runners, the Tamar Trails provide an invigorating and varied landscape that’s both challenging and rewarding. The mix of flat sections, undulating woodland tracks, and steeper climbs make it a fantastic natural training ground for beginners and experienced trail runners alike. With no road crossings or traffic, it’s a safe and inspiring place to focus on fitness, endurance, or simply clear your mind. The terrain is generally firm underfoot, with sections of compacted gravel and natural earth paths, making it suitable year-round with the right footwear. As you run, the ever-changing scenery—woodland, river valleys, open clearings—keeps each route fresh and motivating. It’s no surprise that the trails are popular with local running groups and visiting runners alike.
Tamar Trails Parkrun
Every Saturday morning at 9am, Tamar Trails comes alive thanks to the Tamar Trails Parkrun — a free, timed 5k event open to runners, joggers, and walkers of all abilities. Set entirely on woodland trails, the route offers a scenic and traffic-free course through the heart of the valley’s natural and historic landscape. Whether you’re chasing a personal best or simply enjoying the atmosphere, parkrun is a fantastic way to stay active and connect with the local community. All are welcome, including families and well-behaved dogs (on short leads). Parking charges apply, and participants are encouraged to car share where possible. Just remember to register at parkrun.org.uk and bring your barcode!
