Guests staying at Okel Tor Mine are offered a complimentary guided mine tour, which is around one hour and takes in the mine ruins and boardwalks along the riverbank.
Your guide is Jon Tully, owner of Okel Tor Mine, and he’ll point out the most interesting archaeological features on the 16-acre site and explain the history of the mine and the uses of the ruined buildings. Historical photographs, maps and plans of the mine are provided to put everything into context. The tour is entirely above ground, but please be aware the route includes uneven paths and steep steps.
About Okel Tor Mine
Nestled within 16 acres of private woodland just upstream from Calstock, Okel Tor Mineoffers a rare blend of heritage and tranquility. Once a thriving 19th-century tin and copper mine, this Scheduled Ancient Monument has been transformed into a peaceful wildlife haven and the setting for two romantic retreats.
Our Grade II listed cottages, The Count House and The Smithy, are tucked away among ancient oak and beech trees. While hidden in the woods, they boast spectacular, panoramic views across the River Tamar toward the rolling hills of the Devon countryside.
