Welcome to Tamar
The 61 mile Tamar River forms most of the natural, incredibly beautiful border between Devon and Cornwall. Brunel’s famous rail and road bridge is just one of the Tamar’s 22 road crossings and is a sight to behold all by itself.
Home to the coastal city of Plymouth and many characterful market towns that have sprung up along the banks of the rivers, there is plenty for the whole family to immerse themselves in here in the Tamar Valley.
Together with its main tributaries – the Lynher and Tavy – the River Tamar forms the 75 square mile Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The river valley and surrounding rolling countryside make up the most spectacular natural environment, rich with local plant and wildlife to explore and enjoy. The breathtaking river valleys and wide open space draw in adventure seekers from all across the country to enjoy the natural beauty.
The tidal estuaries of the Tamar River have lead to the area being designated both a European Special Area of Conservation and a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the unique flora and fauna here. UNESCO have also declared the Tamar Valley a World Heritage Site thanks to its rich mining history. In short, there is an abundance of things to see and do during your time in the valley.
