In this article, we hear from Michelle Deane who runs a marvellous complex of traditional stone-built cottages known as Higher Longford Cottages. Located on Dartmoor, not far from the historic Stannary town on Tavistock and the wider Tamar Valley, the weather can be a real factor when it comes to enjoying the area. Read Michelle’s suggestions to ensure a great short break should the weather turn wet!
You’ve planned your holiday, packed your bags, and crossed your fingers for sunshine… only to be greeted by rain. Don’t worry! West Devon and the Tamar Valley is full of brilliant things to do, even when the weather isn’t on your side. Rain or shine, we want you to fall in love with the area and have an unforgettable holiday.
The Tamar Valley and Dartmoor can feel like another world when the weather takes a turn. Fog, wind, and rain can make the moors tricky to navigate and our wooded valleys a little treacherous. If it’s a proper wet day, we don’t recommend venturing onto the open moors unless you’re an experienced walker. But don’t fret—there’s loads to do indoors and all around the area to keep everyone happy.

Dive Into Swimming Fun

Rainy-Day Adventures
Here are some top spots for a great day out:
- Tamar Valley Donkey Park: Perfect for kids (and adults who secretly love donkeys). There’s an indoor play barn, a cosy café, and of course, donkeys to meet. Venture outside between showers or stay snug indoors—either way, it’s a lovely day out, and you’ll be supporting a good cause.
- National Trust Properties: Got a National Trust membership? Pop into nearby gems like Buckland Abbey, Cotehele, Lydford Gorge, or Saltram. While many of these properties are better in good weather, the indoor parts still make for an inexpensive and fascinating visit.
- National Marine Aquarium, Plymouth: Explore the wonders of the deep without getting wet! As the UK’s largest aquarium, it’s home to over 4,000 ocean creatures. Kids will love the activities, and it’s right on Plymouth Barbican—a picturesque spot for a bite to eat or a browse in the shops. (Tip: Book your tickets in advance.)

Plymouth Perks
If you’re craving a bit of city life:
- The Barcode: A brilliant spot in Plymouth for shopping, dining, and catching the latest films. There’s even a bowling alley at the Vue cinema just out of town.
- Drake Circus: Plymouth’s main shopping centre is packed with shops, cafés, and restaurants. Perfect for a leisurely afternoon.
Tavistock Treasures
Closer to home, Tavistock has its own little cinema, The Wharf, which often hosts music evenings as well as films. It’s a charming venue—check out their website or Facebook page for what’s on.
Tavistock is also a haven for foodies and shoppers. Browse the independent shops and a visit to the historic Tavistock Pannier Market is a must. Or, why not treat yourself to a meal? Whether you’re after fine dining at The Cornish or Taylors, or a proper fish and chip supper at Mickey’s Plaice, you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Cream Tea Heaven
No trip to the Tamar Valley and its near neighbour Dartmoor is complete without a cream tea. Tavistock, the home of the cream tea, has plenty of spots to indulge, including the historic Bedford Hotel. For something a bit further afield, head to Strawberry Fields Farm Shop in Lifton—it’s a cream tea lover’s dream! If the rain lets up, you could follow it with a stroll around Roadford Reservoir.
Embrace the Rain!
Sometimes, the best memories come from donning your waterproofs and jumping straight into the adventure. The Tamar Valley’s mild weather means that even rain doesn’t have to stop the fun:
- Rainy Walks: Try a short woodland walk like Holden Woods or Tamar Trails, where the trees offer some shelter.
- Beach Trips: Who says beaches are just for sunny days? Head to Looe, Widemouth Bay, Bude, or Wembury. Wellies, waterproofs, and maybe even shorts—it’s a quirky, refreshing way to enjoy the seaside.

For the Brave: Walking on Dartmoor in the Rain
If you’re experienced and properly prepared, walking on Dartmoor in wet weather can be an unforgettable experience. Moody skies, dramatic landscapes, and even rainbows make for stunning photos. But safety is key—check the Dartmoor National Park’s advice on walking in bad weather before you head out.
