Winter Festivities in the Tamar Valley

The Tamar Valley is truly magical during the festive season! It’s a cherished time, filled with peace, goodwill, and a joyful spirit that lights up every town and village. High streets sparkle with twinkling lights, and shop windows are dressed in enchanting Christmas themes. Visiting the Tamar Valley in winter and especially during the festive season is a delight for the senses, surrounded by beautiful landscapes and endless opportunities for holiday cheer. Here, we share some inspiring ideas to make the most of this special season in the valley.  There’s nothing quite like it!

Cosy Retreats

The Tamar Valley boasts a wonderful array of places to stay, from cozy cottages with crackling fireplaces to charming country hotels. Picture yourself on Christmas morning, sipping hot cocoa by the fire or waking up to stunning views of the frosted river valley.  Some accommodations offer festive packages, complete with holiday dining and decorations, adding a touch of magic to your stay. So its worth having a browse around this website to see what’s on offer.

If you’re after a winter wonderland (and if we’re very lucky), head to nearby Dartmoor where you’ll discover spectacular views, wild ponies and miles and miles of trails to explore. Stay at the Ramblers Rest over the festive period and Santa might even drop by for a mince-pie or two. Or how about a cosy stay at Okel Tor Mine on the banks of the River Tamar?  If super-quirky is more your style, you won’t go wrong with a stay for all the family at The Farmhouse at Spring Parc.

Festive Markets

Get into the festive spirit by visiting the local Christmas markets, where you’ll find one-of-a-kind gifts, delicious seasonal treats, and a warm holiday atmosphere. From handcrafted ornaments and artisanal goods to the cosy scent of roasted chestnuts and mulled wine, these charming markets offer a delightful holiday experience you won’t want to miss. You can get your own Christmas Market season off to a good start by visiting the Christmas and Food Market at Harrow Barrow Village Hall.

Yuletide Events

Starting in November and continuing on throughout December, the Tamar Valley is brimming with festive events—from carol concerts and Christmas craft workshops to holiday party nights and, of course, Santa’s Grotto. There are endless ways to join in the holiday cheer and make unforgettable memories with loved ones. Cotehele simply has to be on your list. From November 11th you can visit to take a behind-the-scenes look as their team of gardners create this year’s garland. This traditional garland is made up of over 30,000 dried flowers and, once complete, is displayed in the Great Hall.

Or, if you fancy something a bit different, hop aboard the Santa Bus. Kids will simply love it! The service is run by volunteers from Go Cornwall Bus raising funds for local charities. Santa and his helpers will be on board spreading a good cheer and happiness and stopping at villages across the region.

Homeleigh Garden Centre is the place to visit for a state of the art and truly Magical Sleigh Ride with Santa. Be one of the fist to test out Santa’s brand new sleigh as you zoom across the globe and even into outer space!  When he’s not zooming about on his sleigh, catch Santa in his Grotto too.

Santa will also be spending some time at Tamar View Nurseries. Admire his gorgeous collection of animations and displays, and collect a special gift from the big man himself!

Christmas at Cotehele and the Garland within the Great Hall

Celebrate the holiday season with a visit to Cotehele, where the annual Christmas Garland transforms the Great Hall into a winter wonderland. For over sixty-five years, Cotehele’s garden team has crafted this impressive sixty-foot garland using thousands of flowers grown on the estate. This year, they’re marking seventy-five years of caring for Cotehele with a special garland in honor of this milestone anniversary.

Nestled along the River Tamar, Cotehele is one of the Tamar Valley’s most cherished treasures. This atmospheric Tudor house with medieval roots is surrounded by stunning gardens and valley views. During the festive season, you can also explore the charmingly decorated Cotehele Mill, wander the historic quay, and enjoy the expansive, dog-friendly estate—perfect for a post-Christmas stroll with the family!

Christmas Carols in the Courtyard at Pentillie Castle

Pentillie castle enjoys a commanding position set high above the River Tamar.  The views are spectacular looking out across the river as it flows downstream and widens to an estuary before flowing into Plymouth Sound. What more perfect setting for traditional Carols in the Courtyard, a jolly Christmas sing-along to get those wonderful Christmas feels going in earnest?

The event is once again supported by the local Cargreen Choir which will lead the singing in aid of Saltash foodbank.

No pre-booking is needed for this one, however the Pentillie Castle and Estate would be pleased to take in any monetary of food donations you can make. So, come along and join in an evening of fun and festive merry-making. There’ll be mulled wine, hot chocolate, and scrummy mince pies too.
