Winter Festivities in the Tamar Valley
The Tamar Valley is truly magical during the festive season! It’s a cherished time, filled with peace, goodwill, and a joyful spirit that lights up every town and village. High streets sparkle with twinkling lights, and shop windows are dressed in enchanting Christmas themes. Visiting the Tamar Valley in winter and especially during the festive season is a delight for the senses, surrounded by beautiful landscapes and endless opportunities for holiday cheer. Here, we share some inspiring ideas to make the most of this special season in the valley. There’s nothing quite like it!
Cosy Retreats
The Tamar Valley boasts a wonderful array of places to stay, from cozy cottages with crackling fireplaces to charming country hotels. Picture yourself on Christmas morning, sipping hot cocoa by the fire or waking up to stunning views of the frosted river valley. Some accommodations offer festive packages, complete with holiday dining and decorations, adding a touch of magic to your stay. So its worth having a browse around this website to see what’s on offer.
If you’re after a winter wonderland (and if we’re very lucky), head to nearby Dartmoor where you’ll discover spectacular views, wild ponies and miles and miles of trails to explore. Stay at the Ramblers Rest over the festive period and Santa might even drop by for a mince-pie or two.
Festive Markets
Get into the festive spirit by visiting the local Christmas markets, where you’ll find one-of-a-kind gifts, delicious seasonal treats, and a warm holiday atmosphere. From handcrafted ornaments and artisanal goods to the cosy scent of roasted chestnuts and mulled wine, these charming markets offer a delightful holiday experience you won’t want to miss. You can get your own Christmas Market season off to a good start by visiting the Christmas and Food Market at Harrow Barrow Village Hall.
Christmas Fun on the Water
How about a festive cruise? Each year Plymouth Boat Trips treats its customers to two fabulous outings. Choose the Kids Santa’s Christmas Disco, a fun-packed cruise for all the family. Or, how about an evening Christmas Party Cruise? Dance, mingle and enjoy a complimentary drink as you soak up those festive feels.
Winter Walks
The Tamar Valley’s natural beauty is especially enchanting in winter. Bundle up and explore riverside paths or wander through nearby woodlands, where the crisp air and peaceful landscape, sometimes dusted with snow if we’re lucky, create a truly serene setting. It’s the perfect way to clear your mind and connect with nature during the holiday season.
Culinary Delights
Treat yourself to the culinary delights of the Tamar Valley during the festive season! Local eateries and hotels offer special holiday menus brimming with seasonal ingredients and classic favorites. From hearty Christmas roasts and breakfasts with Santa to sumptuous seafood feasts and local cheeses paired with fine wines, the valley’s food scene is bound to impress.
In Tavistock, the much loved Bedford Hotel invites you to enjoy a superb 3-course festive dinner with live jazz from the ever-popular Desperate Measures. Meanwhile, the Arundell Hotel is hosting a tempting two or three-course festive menu available at both lunch and dinner.
Yuletide Events
Starting in November and continuing on throughout December, the Tamar Valley is brimming with festive events—from carol concerts and Christmas craft workshops to holiday party nights and, of course, Santa’s Grotto. There are endless ways to join in the holiday cheer and make unforgettable memories with loved ones. Cotehele simply has to be on your list. From November 11th you can visit to take a behind-the-scenes look as their team of gardners create this year’s garland. This traditional garland is made up of over 30,000 dried flowers and, once complete, is displayed in the Great Hall.
Or, if you fancy something a bit different, hop aboard the Santa Bus. Kids will simply love it! The service is run by volunteers from Go Cornwall Bus raising funds for local charities. Santa and his helpers will be on board spreading a good cheer and happiness and stopping at villages across the region.
Homeleigh Garden Centre is the place to visit for a state of the art and truly Magical Sleigh Ride with Santa. Be one of the fist to test out Santa’s brand new sleigh as you zoom across the globe and even into outer space! When he’s not zooming about on his sleigh, catch Santa in his Grotto too.
Santa will also be spending some time at Tamar View Nurseries. Admire his gorgeous collection of animations and displays, and collect a special gift from the big man himself!

In Tavistock
Explore unique gift and craft stalls in the historic Pannier Market for special holiday finds, and be captivated by street entertainers bringing festive cheer. Gather in the Square at 5:45 p.m. for the grand lighting of the three magnificent Christmas trees, accompanied by carol singing to get everyone into the holiday spirit.
In Launceston
The festivities kick off at 4 p.m. with a seasonal market, where local artisans and makers will showcase delicious food, drinks, and unique gifts. Father Christmas will be waiting in his grotto to share small gifts with the children, and festive face painting will be available for an added holiday touch.
The evening’s highlight, an illuminated parade led by Launceston Town Band and Santa’s sleigh, will start at 6:15 p.m. from the Central Methodist Church, moving through town and arriving in Town Square for the 6:30 p.m. lights-on countdown with this year’s Carnival Queen. Holiday magic will fill the high street, with street performers, jugglers, and outdoor theatre, as local shops stay open until 8 p.m. adorned with beautiful festive displays.
Enjoy live performances on the Christmas stage by local schools, singers, and choirs. Don’t miss the enchanting Christmas Tree Festival at St. Mary Magdalene’s, and warm up with complimentary tea, coffee, and mince pies at the Methodist Church from 6 p.m.
Launceston Town Council extends a heartfelt thank you to all sponsors, vendors, and community groups for making this event possible. We look forward to celebrating the season with you!
From all of us, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Christmas at Cotehele and the Garland within the Great Hall
Celebrate the holiday season with a visit to Cotehele, where the annual Christmas Garland transforms the Great Hall into a winter wonderland. For over sixty-five years, Cotehele’s garden team has crafted this impressive sixty-foot garland using thousands of flowers grown on the estate. This year, they’re marking seventy-five years of caring for Cotehele with a special garland in honor of this milestone anniversary.
Nestled along the River Tamar, Cotehele is one of the Tamar Valley’s most cherished treasures. This atmospheric Tudor house with medieval roots is surrounded by stunning gardens and valley views. During the festive season, you can also explore the charmingly decorated Cotehele Mill, wander the historic quay, and enjoy the expansive, dog-friendly estate—perfect for a post-Christmas stroll with the family!
Christmas Carols in the Courtyard at Pentillie Castle
Pentillie castle enjoys a commanding position set high above the River Tamar. The views are spectacular looking out across the river as it flows downstream and widens to an estuary before flowing into Plymouth Sound. What more perfect setting for traditional Carols in the Courtyard, a jolly Christmas sing-along to get those wonderful Christmas feels going in earnest?
The event is once again supported by the local Cargreen Choir which will lead the singing in aid of Saltash foodbank.
No pre-booking is needed for this one, however the Pentillie Castle and Estate would be pleased to take in any monetary of food donations you can make. So, come along and join in an evening of fun and festive merry-making. There’ll be mulled wine, hot chocolate, and scrummy mince pies too.
New Year’s Eve Celebrations
Say goodbye to the old year and welcome the new with a splash! The New Year is never complete without parties and pantos. Head to the China Fleet Country Club for their New Year’s Eve Party and why not treat the whole family to Beauty and the Beast in pantomime?
Across the Tamar Valley, many venues are hosting New Year’s Eve parties and fireworks displays, catering to every mood—from cosy gatherings by the fire to lively nights of dancing and celebration. For example, The Arundell Hotel in Lifton invites you to dine in style in its restaurant. The restaurant at the Arundell is elegant and beautiful with huge palms in old copper pots and an enormous crystal chandelier, the perfect setting for a special dinner on 31st December. Or, how about ringing in the new year with a grand 5-course celebratory dinner featuring some of the finest local ingredients at The Bedord Hotel in Tavistock?
