Full information

A very special place to stay on the Bere Peninsula, Devon. This refurbished traditional slate-hung ‘one-up-one-down’ former silver miner’s cottage was built in the 1800s. Set in the Tamar Valley National Landscape and Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site and very close to the Tamara Coast to Coast Way, there are great views of Cornwall and you can share use of our quarter acre garden. Full self-catering or you can book breakfast and/or evening meals made by Martin, a professional chef. Birland Cottage is a self-contained annexe with its own private entrance.

Downstairs, the small kitchen area comes with induction hob, microwave, fridge, sink, kettle (plus tea, coffee and milk), toaster and all your cooking, crockery and cutlery essentials. There’s also a sofa, bookcase with local brochures and maps, a dining table and chairs – with eating on the patio in the summer an option. Upstairs, you’ll find a double bed, chest of drawers, TV, books to read, board games and an en suite shower room. Free Wifi is available throughout. Separate wet clothes, muddy boots and bike storage available.

Sustainability

We provide guests with Fairtrade coffee, tea and organic fruit infusions plus organic milk (with oat milk available on request)and local Tamar Valley apple juice. While the cottage is fully self-catering, we offer optional evening meals and breakfasts, making the most of produce from our garden and allotment and otherwise sourcing from local independent shops. Our own grown, home made jams and chutneys are available to buy, as well as marmalade – admittedly with fruit from further afar! Guests are welcome to share use of our 1/4 acre garden where we grow for bio-diversity on organic principles, make lots of compost, harvest as much water as possible and like planting trees. The cottage is furnished with many pre-loved and upcycled items and we chose the new sofa for its cushions filled with recycled materials: very comfy too! Our sheets and towels are organic cotton; toilet tissue and kitchen roll are recycled paper. We use Ecover cleaning products, have lovely Faith in Nature products for the shower room and provide separate containers for recycling items, food waste and general waste. In terms of travel, we promote our village train station (just 10 minutes walk down the road) and have separate storage available for bicycles, muddy boots and wet weather gear. Finally, we provide lots of information enabling visitors to enjoy and contribute to everything that’s local.
