Cotehele is a National Trust owned Tudor house with an extensive garden, orchards, estate, quay and a watermill. Look out for family activities and other events including the 60ft garland which spans the Great Hall throughout Christmastime.
This rambling granite and slate-stone home, high above the River Tamar, was built by the Edgcumbes and remained in their family for nearly 600 years. The hall, with its ancient timber roof and displays of weaponry, and the warren of tapestry-clad rooms beyond have changed little since Tudor times. The twelve-acre garden features history daffodils, terraces, ponds and orchards with over 125 local apple varieties. The Valley Garden with medieval stewpond and dovecote leads to Cotehele Quay – thriving in Victorian times – where today you’ll find lime kilns, an intertidal habitat and the Chapel-in-the-Woods.
A peaceful walk alongside the Morden stream from Cotehele Quay takes you to Cotehele Mill as well as many miles of woodland paths to explore.
Dogs are welcome on the estate walks, within the Barn Cafe and shop, and within some areas of the garden. Only assistance dogs within the house, garden, orchard,s and mill buildings.
Cotehele’s Bull Pen Gallery is a showcase of ever-changing high-quality craft from professional West Country artists. A pure delight for browsing. Open daily (except 25 and 26 December).
