Wildlife & Nature

The Tamar Valley is a haven for wildlife right along its length from the upper reaches of the river all the way to The Sound and Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City. As such its a paradise for nature lovers. Bridging the border between Devon and Cornwall, this diverse landscape of ancient woodlands, winding rivers, wildflower meadows and rolling farmland offers a rich and ever-changing natural environment to explore throughout the year.

The River Tamar and its tributaries, the Tavy and Lynher support a wide range of species, from otters and kingfishers to herons and salmon. In spring and summer, the valley bursts into colour with bluebells, orchids, and wild garlic carpeting the woodland floor, while butterflies, bees and birdsong fill the air. As the seasons shift, migrating birds arrive, red deer roam the quiet hillsides, and the hedgerows come alive with autumn berries.

Whether you’re walking the many trails and footpaths, paddling a canoe along the river, or simply pausing in a peaceful nature reserve, the valley offers endless opportunities to reconnect with the natural world. Look out for rare species, such as the greater horseshoe bat, as well as a rich variety of fungi, lichens and mosses that thrive in the valley’s mild, damp climate.

We’re passionate about protecting this special place for generations to come. That’s why we support sustainable tourism through the Green Tourism Programme, encouraging visitors and businesses alike to help care for the land and the life it supports.

Come and experience the quiet magic of the Tamar Valley—where nature still leads the way.

Enjoy the great outdoors
