Discover Tavistock Pannier Market: Britain’s Best Market 2025 and a Historic Gem in the Heart of Devon

Just behind Tavistock Town Hall and off the lively high street, you’ll find a shopper’s haven—Tavistock Pannier Market. Tucked away among lovely independent shops and cafes, this historic market invites visitors to step inside and explore a wide range of traders, artists, and craftspeople offering quality goods at great prices.

Tavistock has been a market town for over 900 years, ever since King Henry I granted it a market charter in 1105. Back then, weekly markets were held in Bank Square and were vital to the local farming community. In 1860, the Seventh Duke of Bedford made big changes—he diverted the River Tavy and built the impressive Market Hall, which still stands today. Picture busy scenes filled with horses and ponies carrying baskets, townsfolk arriving by cart or on foot—just like a supermarket today, but with a lot more character!

Fast forward over 150 years, and while many markets across the country have disappeared, Tavistock Pannier Market has grown and adapted. Today, it’s a vibrant place full of life, offering something different every day.

The market is open Tuesday to Saturday, with extra Monday openings during summer holidays. You’ll find a wide mix of stallholders—photographers, potters, clothing designers, furniture makers, and more. Some stalls are permanent and offer everyday essentials like books, pet supplies, fashion jewellery, cakes, and more.

Each day has a different theme—some days feature crafts, others antiques or collectibles, and some are general markets with a bit of everything. Food lovers will enjoy the tasty options available at the on-site cafes or from food stalls serving fresh, local treats.

The surrounding shops have also grown alongside the market. Today, Tavistock is home to a fantastic variety of independent businesses—from butchers and bakers to barbers, cheese shops, and gift stores.

Throughout the year, the market hosts special events like pre-Christmas fairs, charity fundraisers, and themed markets. Plus, the award-winning Tavistock Farmers’ Market, held twice a month, adds even more to explore.

Whether you’re hunting for a unique gift, grabbing a bite to eat, or just enjoying the atmosphere, Tavistock Pannier Market offers a warm welcome and a truly memorable shopping experience.
